Framing: presentation & conservation
Conservation
Artwork can suffer from maltreatment, ie, bad framing, chemical instability from the materials used, natural conditions such as ozon, ammonia, pollution, nicotine, heat, dust, insects etc..
GOOD Framing is the only solution.
Presentation
The main purpose is; protection of the artwork, its' display and physical attachment to the wall. The frame should enhance the subject and colourscheme whilest remaining unobtrucive to the picture. It should serve to define the picture's perimeter and should focus the eye of the observer to its subjectmatter..It should provide an area of transition between the real world and that of the picture, creating harmony with its surroundings [ ie: interior decoration} thereby eliminating the" visual confusion" caused by for example a distractingly "buzy" backdrop.
FRAMING : making a choice
- Different depictions need different types of frame. Frames can be simple or elaborate (with ornamentation). The choice of frame should enhance the piece of art, not overpower it.
- Art on paper. The knowledge and skill of the framer is crucial to preservation of the artwork for decades to come.
- Some works of art need matting (passe-partout). Good quality mats and backing are of extreme importance.
